Galatians 3:6-9…6 Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. [Quote from Genesis 15:6] 7 Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. 8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.”[Quote from Genesis 12:3c] 9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.
Just as Abraham was counted righteous by faith, so we are counted righteous by faith. From the Jews view, to be an ethnic son of Abraham was to be a child of the promise, a son of God. However, the scripture challenges this by arguing that “those who are of faith are sons of Abraham” v.7. The true sons of Abraham are the spiritual sons of Abraham, who have received the Spirit of God by faith in Jesus–Gentile and Jew. Abraham believed in God through faith, and it was counted to him as righteousness, so also when we place our faith in, we receive His righteousness. [2 Corinthians 5:21]\
Therefore, in Jesus, we stand before God not on the basis of our own righteousness that we have earned through works of the law, but rather on the basis of the righteousness of Jesus. It is essential, for the sake of our souls and for the sake of our church, that we rest our assurance not on our human work but rather on the Lord Jesus Christ.
Praise God today for the example of Abraham. Pray that just as he had faith in God, so you also would have faith in Jesus.
