Ephesians 5:18c “be filled with the Spirit” NASB, NIV, NLT & ESV
The content of the filling is the Spirit in these and other translations. AA
Dr. Lambert believes that the phrase should translated “be filled by the Spirit” for 3 reasons. There is no reason in grammar or translation to interpret the verse as “be filled with the Spirit” where the Spirit is the content of the filling. It seems odd that Paul calls for more and more Spirit fillings, given that the Disciple is filled with the Spirit at salvation, and this is the only place in scripture we are told we need more fillings of the Spirit. It is not impossible for a theology to be based on one scripture, but it would be unusual when there is another more simple way to interpret the passage. A
The Christian Standard Bible version of the Bible agrees with Dr. Lambert, Ephesians 5:18c be filled by the Spirit: [CSB] Dr. Lambert’s book and the CSB were both copyright in 2016.
The indwelling Spirit can fill the Disciple with this content; teaching the Word in an understanding way to know more and more of the love and glory of Jesus, B guidance, C bringing Jesus glory by telling you whatever He receives from Jesus, D conviction of sin, E the fruit of the Spirit F strenth G and intercession H.
The fruit of the Spirit includes the power for me to control my will and exercise His power over sin.
Be filled by the Spirit all the time.
Notes: AA- I have often studied and meditated as to the meaning of the last phrase in Ephesians 5:18 “be filled with the Spirit”. The Bible clearly teaches the Disciple receives the Holy Spirit when saved, so why the need for further filling. The explanation has been at salvation we are indwelled by the Holy Spirit but need a daily filling or to be controlled by the Spirit. I could never quite understand how I could be controlled by the Holy Spirit and yet have a free will. Also one of the fruit of the Spirit is self control or the power to be obedient to the commandments of God.
