The Presence, Psalm 84, Part 5 of 5

THE PRESENCE of the Lord Who gives grace and glory [Psalm 84:10-12] 10 For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand outside. I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God Than dwell in the tents of wickedness. 11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord gives grace and glory; No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly. 12 O Lord of hosts, How blessed [happy] is the man who trusts in You!

v.10 The psalmist offered two contrasts that express how happy he was to be in God’s presence in the place of worship.

1st, he contrasted one day at church with a thousand days elsewhere. How much more valuable is being in the place of worship and in God’s presence than being any other place and doing anything else? It is a thousand times more valuable! The psalmist preferred one day in worship over three years of being in his second-favorite place!

2nd, the psalmist contrasted being an usher at the door of God’s church to being in a place with wicked people.

I always loved going to church. However, in 1972 I stayed home from Training Union and watched the Super Bowl. Dr. Lindsay took that night to report in TU a report I had developed recommending the church build what is the Lindsay Auditorium. I learned a lesson! He reminded me of that miss every year until 1983. Don’t miss a service at FBC. A man told me in 1980’s his time was to important to go to church on Wednesday night. He lost his wife and had a lot of trouble over the next decade or so. His actions caused a lot of people deep trouble.

vv.11-12 The Psalmist loved the place of worship because he loved the God who was worshiped there.

In v.11 “The Sun”, God is the light of our lives, providing illumination and direction; The Bible says: Your word is a lamp to my feet [for short term direction] And a light to my path.” [for long term guidance] . [Psalms 119:105] and “Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”  [John 8:12]

As our “shield”, God provides protection in the life long war with our 3 enemies–self, Satan & the world system. “Taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” [Ephesians 6:16]

Do you have a daily battle plan for how to defeat your 3 enemies and be on the offense for Jesus?

The psalmist praised God as the One who gives us “grace and glory”. If people want grace and forgiveness, they find it only from the one true God. Many people think that a life characterized by faithful worship and obedience to God would be boring, or that they would miss a lot of fun. Just the opposite, we miss nothing good by pursuing God.

People who praise God in the place of worship are happy [Psalm 84:4], people who look to God for strength are happy [Psalm 84:5], and people who put their trust in God are happy [Psalm 84:12]. We love the place of worship because we love the One we worship there, and only in Him will we be satisfied. John said “We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” [1 John 4:16]

What had you rather do than be in the church worshipping God and worshipping Him  in a daily personal bible study, meditating, praying and application time ?

Think about people who assume that knowing and loving God will hinder their enjoyment of life. What could you share from your own life that would show them that a relationship with love of God results in joy, not boredom?
