Prayer from 1st Peter and related passages for time’s of suffering and fiery trials #254

I greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while I have been distressed by various trials. So that the proof of my faith, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the return of Jesus Christ.1   After I have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called me to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish me.2

It is written, you shall be holy, for I am holy.3  Your word is a lamp to my feet for today and a light to my path for the future.4  My faith increases from reading, understanding and applying the word of Christ.8  As a living stone, I am being built up as part of a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.  Holy Spirit help me keep my behavior excellent among  unbelievers, so that in the thing in which they slander me as an evildoer, they may because of observing my good deeds, glorify God in the day of their salvation.10

Help me as a person called by the name of Jesus, to humble myself, pray, seek the presence of God and turn from their wicked ways. Then You promise to hear from heaven, and forgive their sin and heal their land.11  By your grace I will trust in the Lord with all my heart and I will not lean on my own understanding. In all my ways I will acknowledge God, and He will make my paths straight.  I will not be wise in my own eyes; instead I will reverence God and turn away from evil.12

Help me to be agreeable, be sympathetic, be loving, be compassionate, and be humble. That goes for me all the time, no exceptions, no retaliation and no sharp-tongued sarcasm. Instead, bless—that’s my job, to bless. I’ll be a blessing and also get a blessing.13  Let no unwholesome word proceed from my mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.  Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from me, along with all malice.  Let me be kind to others, tender-hearted, forgiving others, just as God in Christ also has forgiven me. Let me not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom I was sealed for the day of redemption.  14

Set apart Jesus Christ as Lord and Master in my life! Help me always be ready to make a defense to everyone who asks me to give an account for the hope that is in me, yet with gentleness and reverence.15    I know that my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in me, whom I have from God, and that I am not my own?16 Jesus help me be controlled by the Spirit continually;17 and give me the fruit of the Spirit love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.18

The end of all things is near; therefore, help me to be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.  Above all, I will strive by God’s greater grace19 to keep fervent in my love for others, because love covers a multitude of sins. 20
