[722-400 BC] Assyria, Babylon and Persia ruled the middle east. God used the first two to punish the Israelites and then Persia to allow their return to Jerusalem. Prophets during this period gave God’s message in 3 parts 1) the near term capture of Judea and then return to Jerusalem 2) the 1st coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ and 3) the long term future–the tribulation, 2nd coming of Jesus Christ, the millennium and heaven for believers. Sometimes all 3 parts may be foretold in one passage of scripture. Since the 1st two parts have occurred we can be certain that the third will occur, preceded by the rapture of church age believers.
[722 BC] Israel- ten Northern tribes captured by Assyria and citizens assimilated with Assyrians. Their descendents were the Samaritans during time of Jesus.
[660 BC?] Assyria/Nineveh will be punished by Babylon Nahum 1: 7 The LORD is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in him. 8 But he will sweep away his enemies in an overwhelming flood. He will pursue his foes into the darkness of night. Tigris River flooded & destroyed enough of the 100 ft wall to allow Babylon army to enter & destroy Nineveh in 612 BC.
[626 BC] A Day of Reckoning coming soon Zephaniah 1: 12 It will come about at that time that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are stagnant in spirit, who say in their hearts, ‘The Lord will not do good or evil!’ 13 Moreover, their wealth will become plunder and their houses desolate; yes, they will build houses but not inhabit them, and plant vineyards but not drink their wine.” 606-586 BC
Long term future Tribulation, 2nd Coming & Millennium (Rev. 19:11-20:15) Zephaniah 1: 15 A day of wrath is that day, a day of trouble and distress, a day of destruction and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, 18 all the earth will be devoured in the fire of His jealousy, for He will make a complete end, indeed a terrifying one, of all the inhabitants of the earth. Zephaniah 3: 9 “For then I will give to the peoples purified lips, That all of them may call on the name of the LORD, To serve Him shoulder to shoulder.
[609 BC] “Habakkuk” a dialogue between Habakkuk and God
Habakkuk said “God when are you going to do something about evil in Judah?” 1:1-4 God says “I am in control and you are not going to like what I plan to do, because I am going to use the evil Chaldeans/Babylonians to punish Judah” 1:5-11 Habakkuk said “But God, Why, Why, Why, never the less I will wait for you to speak to me?” 1:12-2:1
God said Trust Me now & future! “The righteous will live by faith.” [quoted 3 times in NT] 2:2-4
God pronounced 5 woes on those who reject or disobey Him. 2:5-19
Habakkuk’s responds with a prayer of faith! Habakkuk 3: 16 I heard and my inward parts trembled, At the sound my lips quivered. Decay enters my bones, And in my place I tremble. [536 BC] Persia defeated Babylon. Release of captives and restoration of temple ordered by King Cyrus. Zerubbabel & Joshua led group from Persia to Jerusalem, Construction on temple stopped in 535 BC
[520 BC] Prophets Haggai and Zechariah encouraged the people. King Darius found the order of King Cyrus and ordered the temple construction to continue. Temple complete-516 BC
[August 520 BC] Rebuild the temple Haggai 1: 12 Then Zerubbabel and Joshua, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him. And the people showed reverence for the LORD. 13 Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke by the commission of the LORD to the people saying, “‘I am with you,’ declares the LORD.”

Promise of 1st coming of Jesus Zechariah 9: 9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just [righteous] and endowed with salvation [victorious], Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

False Worship Malachi 1: 6 “‘A son honors his father, and a servant his master. Then if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is My respect?’ says the LORD of hosts to you, O priests who despise My name. But you say, ‘How have we despised Your name?’
All Israelites were to be priests–Exodus 19:6 and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’
But, Where are the Messengers of the Lord of Hosts?
