What is meant by the “Day of the Lord”? Discipleship Training #122

The words “Day of the Lord” appear in 29 verses in the Bible beginning with Isaiah 13:6 and ending with 2 Peter 3:10. (A) Most of the time the term is used to describe terrible destruction close to the date of writing or total destruction still in the future today. This future event of destruction is also described in numerous Bible verses with out reference to “Day of the LORD”.

Zephaniah, said about all the earth: “” 2 I will completely remove all things From the face of the earth,” declares the LORD. 3 I will remove man and beast; I will remove the birds of the sky And the fish of the sea, And the ruins along with the wicked; And I will cut off man from the face of the earth,” declares the LORD.” (B) This will be fulfilled at the final “Day of the LORD” at the end of the Tribulation. (C)

Then Zephaniah writing in 626 BC said about Judah and Jerusalem; “4 So I will stretch out My hand against Judah And against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, And the names of the idolatrous priests along with the priests. 6 And those who have turned back from following the LORD, And those who have not sought the LORD or inquired of Him. 7Be silent before the Lord GOD! For the day of the LORD is near,” (D) This fall to Babylon was a short time later in 606-586 BC.

Marks of the future destruction at the final “Day of the LORD “; 1) all the earth is involved and 2) occurs at the hand of God. The destruction before the final “Day of the LORD” involves; 1) specific people or nation’s and 2) is at the hand of people or nation’s.

In the battle of Ezekiel 38 Israel’s invaders are destroyed by the hand of God. This is still in the future, but is not the final “Day of the LORD” because the entire earth is not involved. This battle probably occurs in the short interim between the Rapture and the beginning of the Tribulation. (E)

Those in Christ can be thankful that we will be in heaven (F) before the battle of Ezekiel and the Tribulation. At the battle of the final “Day of the LORD” His saints will come from heaven with Him for the battle. (G)
